Progression ladder for reading

What does reading look like at Greenfield?

In EYFS and KS1 our children do Read Write Inc. Further information can be found here.

In kS1 and KS2, children take part in daily Whole Class Reading sessions which are led by the class teacher. This replaces what we previously called Guided Reading. During the week, the children focus on a text or an extract of text and answer questions focused around vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summary (also known as Vipers).

Accelerated Reader is used for independent reading.  Children read a text and then complete a quiz. The scores from these quizzes determine what 'level' book they are on.  The scores are saved online on a secure server which enables staff to see what books have been read, scores from quizzes and improvements over time.

We promote a love of reading through appealing reading areas within classrooms and we have a well stocked library which we restock with pupil request where possible.  Through the year we have fun reading focused days (Roald Dahl Day - September 2019  and World Book Day - March 2020.) Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 we have not had dress up days recently.

Each teacher reads a class novel to their class at some point in the day. The books that are intended to be used can be seen here. Awaiting Y3 and Y4 list.
