This week the children had some hidden surprises in the forest, eggs! The children really enjoyed searching through the forest on the hunt for as many eggs as they could find. The children returned to the fire pit with their found eggs and joined in with counting them all to find the total.
The children used their fantastic number skills to identify who had found the most eggs, this person was the winner!
Pop, pop, popcorn!
The fire was lit in the firepit today, and the children were brilliant at recalling the firepit rules and keeping themselves safe.
"It's hot"
" I can see the smoke, the wind is blowing it"
The children loved listening to the corn kernels as they got hot and popped into popcorn. The children appeared quite amazed how it grew in the pan!
This was a choral response to the popcorn..."can we have some more please?"...do you think the children like popcorn!
How fantastic are our children, listen to them reciting the popcorn poem from The Poetry Basket!
On the walk down to the forest the children are always keen to look through the fence to the pond, what can we see? Has anything changed? This week we spotted something new, Frog spawn!
When the children looked closely at the photos they could see the black specs of tiny tadpoles!
Whilst exploring the forest today the children had a keen eye on their environment and identified a few new changes.
Can you see what they found?
-Leaves uncurling
-buds
-bluebells growing
-warmer weather
-the sun!
It was much easier to climb the trees today. "They are dry" said the children, "no rain today"
The children really helped each other, guiding one another up and across the branch, taking turns and keeping each other safe.
Where do insects live?
The children looked under rocks, logs and all over the forest in search of minibeasts!
The children handled what they found gently and with care. They showed understanding of how it's important to replace what they up turned.
"look I can see these" Amelia has found some tiny green buds.
The children loved the magnifying glasses and spotted a couple of signs of spring with them!
"soft ones" said Kaitlyn as she gently felt the catkins
And of course when the weather is wet there is mud, mud, mud!!!
Oh how we've missed this in lockdown!
After sharing the book 'A Nest is Noisy' the children collected materials to build a nest themselves. The children considered the materials they would need. 'Something soft' said Oliver and 'some sticks' said Umatcan.
Once materials had been collected the children manipulated them into nests 'it needs to be like a circle' said Molly.
The children enjoyed being imaginative with the bird puppets, some children found they needed to adapt their nest to suit the size of the puppet.
'I need to make it bigger' said Aaron 'so it fits under here' Aaron balanced sticks together to create a roof.
We challenged the children today with some maths activity cards. The children explored the forest area to complete their chosen task.
Can you see which shapes we found and made?
It was so tricky to balance 5 pebbles. How many pebbles can you stack and balance?
How many trees can you hug?!
We tried lots, some were thin and we could wrap our arms all the way around. Others were thick and our finger tips didn't even touch.
This week we looked at the features of the heart shape. We know that it has curved and straight edges and a point at the bottom. The children also learn that it is a symmetrical shape.
We found some natural heart shapes in the forest.
The children gathered natural loose parts to create a heart back in nursery.
It was so cold today in the forest. It wasn't long before the children spotted icicles. The grown ups gave them one each, the children were really interested in them and ordered them in length before they melted.
The children at home joined in too, here are just some of the work sent in. Aren't these fantastic?
Today the children explored the different ways to feel safe and secure. We built den's to share a story in. The children demonstrated such brilliant team work as they thought about the way to move furniture safely, secure a canopy and create comfort in the den!
We loved sharing stories in it and even had snack inside too!
Here are some of the dens made at home, these look just as snug and cosy.
It was so snowy today we couldn't resist getting the sledges out!
The children supported one another to climb the slippery hill and took turns to use the sledge.
The children explored the different ways that they could travel down the hill, the snow suits really helped!
We saw lots of birds in flight on our way down to the forest.
The children really thought about the places to sit and look for the birds, the children did a great job of being quiet whilst watching.
The children knew that the binoculars would help them to see further.
The children are getting really good identifying pigeons, blackbirds and magpie. They were a little disappointed that the friendly robin wasn't out and about today.
We used paper plates to make birds, we carefully followed the step by step photograph instructions.
Thank you for sharing your photos of birds from home
The weather was extremely rainy this morning and so we used the bird hide to keep dry whilst we made bird feeders.
The children had really good listening and attention whilst we explained how to make cereal feeders.
Look at our concentration whilst we thread the hoops on to the string!
We could hear lots of bird song whilst we were making but we didn't spot many.
However we did find some little bird friends hiding from us, can you see them?
Do you know the names of them?
This afternoon we made more feeders for the birds. We know that the birds can struggle to find enough food in winter. It's good to be kind and thoughtful.
We used a range of different tools and learnt how to use a palm drill to make holes.
We're hoping to attract more birds to our garden so that we can count them for the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch next week.
The children had great observational skills today, they looked high and low through the forest and spotted many signs of winter.
Miss Jones emptied the water from the canopy, the children know to stand back to save being splashed!
We had a surprise when we looked closer, not only was there water there was something else too, can you guess?
That's right, ice!
"That's really cold" says Skye
"and slippery" says Riley
"The fungi might be down here" says Oliver "like las time, it was here"
The children recalled the location of the fungi
"it is here!"
Teddy went for a walk in the woods and saw a squirrel high in the trees, found acorns and noticed the bare winter trees.
"There look, there's a nest"
We look high up into the trees to find the birds nests"
Meanwhile at home...
Harriett enjoyed the wet weather and found lots of mud and puddles to jump in.
Joshua recalled his last winter walk and shared his snowy photos, he is wishing for more snow soon!
"There's the moss" Molly had identified the moss and matched it to her tick list, she shows her friends where to find it".
Louis explored his garden and could hear the birds singing, they were very loud.
Louis also found these in his garden...do you think Spring might be around the corner?
