What is a bulb?

Before we started our MakEY activities we wanted to find out what the children already knew and understood.

We asked them a few questions as they looked carefully, and handled, a small LED.

What do you think it is?   What can we see?   How can we make it work?

The children were fascinated and noticed different features, their explanations were brilliant!

“It’s like some tweezers, because it’s shiny, I can see a handle”

“It’s sharp, like scissors, scissors are sharp.”

“No switch anywhere and no light. It’s got a circle around it.”

“It could be spiky because it has these end bits, you can poke them, it’s very pretty. It could be magical because it’s pointy. ”

“The end bits are spiky, because they plug in and the wires come through the walls.”

“It’s off a Christmas tree it’s a bauble, it’s a Christmas decoration, why have you snapped it off a Christmas decoration?”

“There’s some water in here… it go in light… it needs electricity... it goes in there to light it up.”

“I can see it snowing. I think we need to get another one, the rainbow ones work, like a rainbow inside. ”

“I can see some clear glue inside that. I can see sharp things on the end. When you switch it on it might have glue inside.”

This... them and that. If you wiggle it about it will follow it.”

“Can I 'ave 'ook in-side… me in-side!”

Hard plastic… glass… you can hold it, they are very sharp.”
