Feeding Birds

It was another cold day in the forest, the pond was icy and the ground was frozen. We went on a Bird Watch, looking for birds and things they could eat.

First we watched Hey Duggee so we knew we had to be quiet to see the birds and earn our Bird Watching Badge. You can watch a short clip here...

We wanted to know if there was water under the ice on the pond.

Mrs Shaw went in the enclosure and removed the balls. We could then see the circular shaped holes the balls had made in the ice and the water underneath.

We looked at the fat balls and put them in our bird feeder until it was full.

We counted 5 fat balls in one bird feeder and 4 in the other.

We looked at the dried meal worms, we thought they looked small, orange and a bit like a caterpillar.

We found some small spaces to put them in the trees and filled a bird feeder for nursery too!

We had to find some where to hang our bird feeders. We tried some low branches but we thought we'd bump into them and the birds might not see them.

We tried some thin branches, but they were too bendy. So we found the tall tress and chose a branch that was high and strong

As the ice melted on the Fire pit shelter we watched from a safe distance as the adults tried to push the water off.

It was so heavy and hard work, so we offered suggestions and encouragement.

"You need to jump."   "Jump higher!"   "You can do it!"

We listened as the water moved, and fell to the ground like a waterfall.
