History: Our Local Area

We have been learning about the history of Hoyland and Elsecar. Did you know that there used to be coal mines and iron works in our local area?

We visited the Elsecar Heritage Centre in October and we have a trip booked to visit Wentworth Woodhouse on Monday 19th November.

On the 9th October, we walked down the hill to the Elsecar Heritage Centre.  While we were there we walked along the canal, looked at the old railway line, saw some of the steam engines and the Newcomen Beam Engine.  We then went inside the museum (after a snack stop) and watched some interesting videos.  Lyndon, from the museum, told us lots of facts and answered all of our questions! We had a great time.  We are lucky to live near such an interesting and historic site.
