Yellow Yachts were very excited to receive a visit from a real hedgehog. We have been finding out about animals that are nocturnal in our Autumn 'Light and dark' topic.
We were shown pictures as the lady explained the things that hedgehogs like and don't like.
Samantha has cared for Rolo since he was a baby and he was very tame. He let us stroke him and feel his prickles. We could see his eyes, nose and paws. Samantha explained that hedgehogs have their name because they live under hedges, they use their nose to find food and grunt like pigs.
We were gentle and quiet so we didn't frightened Rolo. We didn't want to make him roll into a prickly ball.
Samantha handled him very gently. Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals so they like to sleep during the day and come out to play and eat at night.
We listened very carefully and quietly as hedgehogs don't like a lot of noise. It can scare them...
We were even allowed to come up and touch the hedgehog, he was more prickly than we thought.
We learned that hedgehogs like to eat slugs, worms and insects and we told the lady all the things that we had learned about them in class. We also told her about the hedgehog that we have seen in our forest area on Fresh Air Fridays. She was really impressed!.
