Mad about Minibeasts

We watched a story about a caterpillar and looked at the different minibeasts he shared his shoes with. This was a very special caterpillar as most caterpillars only have six legs. The legs at the front are the caterpillar's real legs. The other things that look like legs are in fact 'prolegs'.

You can revisit the story here...

We did a short quiz so we knew some features of different minibeasts before heading off into the forest with our list.

We found loads of different minibeasts in the forest.

"I saw a fly, it went that way and over my head. I saw another fly and it was on some of them!" Amelia says pointing to the grass seed.

There were lots of beetles in the Rowan trees, we put some in a pan to have a closer look.

We found a very tiny caterpillar too!

We found a small creature and we were unsure if it was a millipede or a centipede.

We had to check on google and look in our small fact books. We found out it was a millipede as it had more legs than a centipede, four on each segment.

The legs were smaller than a on a centipede too.

We thought we had found a butterfly, but it was a moth as it's wings were resting at the side and not upright together.

"No that's a butterfly, it's a moth!" Harriet tells the others.

We made sure to tick everything off on our sheet.

We enjoyed our free time on the swings, climbing tress and in the mud kitchen.
